Half-Elf

Half-elves are almost exclusively raised by their human parentage, with brief visits from their elven parents. Even those born to elven mothers are almost always given to their fathers after birth. In cases where their human parents are no longer living or able to care for the child, their elven parent carefully monitors and then chooses a family to raise their child, presenting them with the opportunity and promises of “elvish gifts”. They visit their child often in the younger years, but as they mature, those visits become increasingly sparse.

Half-elves often find kinship with other half-elves, and form communities together.

Many half-elves I have met have a complicated relationship with their parents. Some are driven by a need to discover more about their immortal ancestry and even undertake the near impossible quest of locating their elvish parent; others bitterly reject their heritage. One wonders what drives the elves to so readily abandon their children. Sadly, none of them have responded to my requests for an interview.

Physical Characteristics

Bearing the hallmarks of their airy, immortal parentage and human parentage, half-elves are lithe, graceful beings with an otherworldly appearance. The tips of their ears come to points, and their skin, hair, and irises range from pale blue to blonde to white. They occasionally bear strange, tattoo-like markings over their body, and their eyes almost seem to glow in the wind. Some find them ethereally beautiful, while others see them as alien.

Temperament

Having the human element, their personalities can vary wildly, but most have a strong predisposition towards cleanliness, eloquence, and grace. They tend to appreciate fine art and what they call “high” music: strings, flutes, and none of the thumping drums of Kipling artists, for whom half-elves have a distinct distaste. Despite this, they do not consider themselves above other races, though they sometimes fall into viewing them as a curiosity rather than equals.

Population Centers

Half-elves often find kinship with other half-elves, and form communities together. These civilizations are often built elevated from the ground, whether in the treetops or high up in the mountains. Elan, the Cloud City, is run by the half-elven council. It floats high up in the sky, fueled by old magic or imagination, floating somewhere near the equator in the Pacific Ocean.

Languages

Half-elves have no natal tongue. Most speak either English or the Old World common language.
