Sylvan

Called The Eyes of the Forest in folklore, the long-lived, tree-like Sylvan have long been silent observers of the struggles their old world. The Merge was the stimulus some needed to take a more active role in shaping the destiny of the world; normally content only to intervene in dire circumstances, their Council of Elders, the ancient trees that have lived for tens of thousands of years, has now put out the call for Sylvan adventurers to roam the land and preserve the natural wonder of this new world.

Physical Characteristics

Sylvans range between four and nine-feet tall, and have bark-like skin and leaf-like hair that mirrors the trees of their land, from oak, to birch, to ash, to palm. Their diet is strictly vegetarian. They do not sleep, but rather enter a meditative trance where their roots enter the earth and communicate with the natural world around them.

Temperament

Sylvans abhor anything that opposes the natural order. Evil is viewed as an abberration that must be choked out so that harmony and balance may prevail. Sylvan adventurers view themselves as vanguards against encroaching darkness.

Population Centers

Sylvans can be found in forested areas across the planet. They rarely venture into cities, and when they do, they do not stay long. Occasionally they develop an attachment to smaller hamlets or communities and will reside in a small copse nearby.

The Broken-Winged always feel out of place, I think. They belong in the sky they’ve been exiled from. Being low to the ground, especially outdoors, they appear to shrink in upon themselves.

They fear smaller settlements, imagining a single Other Worlder could get them lynched. They’re most common in the cities with people like me – humans from Earth, but even then, they keep to themselves. Many try to live at some sort of height. Church lofts are popular. I suspect if bell towers were readily available pieces of real estate, the Broken-Winged would be all over them.

Then again, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe the sky terrifies them now that they cannot fly.

Language

Sylvans naturally communicate through a form of collective awareness with other members of their species, passing complex thoughts and statements through images and impressions. However, they have adopted other species’ language to communicate with the outside world. They are very slow to pickup language, and very typically only speak one.

Their native language sounds similar to Romanian, though they don’t speak it often, perhaps as some sort of rebellion against the kin that exiled them. Most of them speak fluent English with a mild, vaguely European accent. I think it is out of necessity rather than anything else – they need to blend in in order to survive. Also, I’ve met exactly one Spanish-speaking Broken-Winged, but she hinted that there was a collection of them living in wherever Spain landed on this planet.
